Our Story

We’re Lynn and Jason Makela, and we love cabins.

The Keweenaw is a special place to us.

We went to school here (Michigan Tech), we met here (Keweenaw Brewing Company), we married here (McLain State Park).

We live in Hancock, Michigan but can frequently be found enjoying all the adventure spots in the Keweenaw.

By day, Jason builds rockets for satellites and Lynn is a digital marketing consultant.

Most recently, we moved back here from Seattle to trade the city hustle for Keweenaw adventures.

We also found a passion for renovating and bringing old structures back to something beautiful.

All of our favorite activities: hiking, biking and skiing led us to a magical cabin on the northernmost part of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

In 2018 we purchased a cabin on Lake Superior to be closer to our favorite outdoor adventures.

In need of much love and repair but in a breathtaking setting on Lake Superior.

We spent two years of weekends breathing love, sweat, and tears into this cabin. We shared the journey and then the cabin+ Keweenaw experience with others through Instagram. What we didn’t expect was what we’d find down the road…

Our cabin fever in full swing, we bought Fresh Coast Cabins—formerly known as Eagle Lodge and Lakeside Cabins.

Now we’re busy renovating and updating each of the nine cabins to provide a delightful launchpad for your adventures in the Keweenaw—the most beautiful place on earth.

We love sharing the magic of Lake Superior

Our goal is to provide an excellent stay with cozy, thoughtful touches and as much information about the local area as you like. We are working hard to curate each space with the basics to connect you with nature while offering a few elevated amenities to make Fresh Coast Cabins the perfect Keweenaw getaway.

What our guests say

Superb stay, exactly what I was looking for

Superb stay, exactly what I was looking for – peaceful and rustic. I only stayed three nights and the cabin began to feel like home. There’s just enough to do locally to get out a bit but not so much that you feel obligated to spend your whole stay out and about when there’s a perfect porch for reading in front of the lake. My only regret is not staying longer.

Perfect for watching the northern lights

If you’re looking for an “out” from the normal pace of life, you must go disconnect at Fresh Coast Cabins. The location was perfect for watching the northern lights and enjoying a long weekend cooking, napping, and staying up all night chatting with friends. You’re also quite close to numerous hikes and sites. We will definitely look to come back when we get another chance for an escape!

Great host, cozy cabin, beautiful views

Great host, cozy cabin, beautiful views, and super close to tons of trails and local attractions. Lynn provides clear directions to help you find the location, check in, and check out. The fire pit was great to use and the cabin included games, music, and lots of info on local places to visit. Definitely recommend!

Why the Keweenaw?

We’re a long drive from anywhere! When folks ask us about why we chose to bring our cabin fever to such a far-removed location, it’s difficult to put into words. Until you’ve felt the magic of this place for yourself, It’s a feeling that’s hard to convey.

When we stand on the shore of Lake Superior, its magnitude is undeniable. This is where we’ve been coming for a long time to let the stress of the outside world melt away. The waves wash our grief away and let in peace, drowning out everything else.

This is why we chose these cabins, in this place, on this lake.

Expect the unexpected. More than just cabins, this is a natural space to reconnect with your fellow humans, meet other adventure seekers, and perhaps forge friendships that will transcend the borders of the Keweenaw.

We’d love to hear from you
